Change of Plans

Hi lovelies! I had originally planned that today’s post would be about the incredible, healthy Easter dinner that I made for my family. It was going to be full of amazing pictures, delicious sounding recipes and a story about how the whole thing came together. It was also going to be the first time that I had cooked a holiday meal all by myself.

But as you can see, that’s not what today’s post is about because the big meal didn’t happen. So here’s that story instead. It all started with the family photo shoot that we had planned. In December, my mom and I saw a Living Social deal for a photo shoot. We both immediately thought it would be a great idea to do a generational one, with my mom, myself and my Grandma. However, we weren’t counting on how hectic it would be preparing for it. Nights after work were spent shopping for the perfect outfits for the three of us, rather than grocery shopping and preparing for my meal. Then on Friday, I realized that I was sick with a bad cold but not one to admit defeat, I  still hoped to push through it and make the Easter meal. However, when we spent from 9 am-7 pm on the photoshoot, which was fantastic, I knew the meal was just not going to happen.

The below is what I had planned on making. Most of the recipes were found on blogs and my favorite recipe finder, Pinterest.

Sadly my healthy menu was never made, however, I plan on making it as a spring dinner for my family sometime soon. In the end, I know that I made the right decision and instead of getting sicker by stressing out by trying to make it all work, we spent time as a family and enjoyed each others company. And when it comes down to it, isn’t that what the holidays are all about?

Unfortunately I was kind of down for the count this weekend with a bad migraine but am on the mend now. Though I was out of the blogging world this weekend, I saw something blog-worthy when I was at the pharmacy and it got me thinking about the healthy and unhealthy environmental influences around us! These are some I found:

This is the pharmacy counter at my local CVS and as you can see it is where they keep the health and fitness magazines. It also happens to be where they put a stash of candy. Since everything in these stores is laid out with a great deal of thought, they must have figured out that people are more inclined to buy candy when they are purchasing their prescription. But it seems so wrong that people would be tempted with this when they are trying to do things that are good for their health!

Healthy: Nutrition Fact Posting

In the past I used to be a little obsessed with reading nutritional facts and could name the calorie content of almost any food. Unfortunately, during this time I let food be defined by the numbers on the label and took that as the only information I needed to know. But now, I look at food in a whole different way, I find that nutrition facts can be helpful, not harmful. Since chain restaurants have been required to post nutritional information in California, I find that it’s really helpful to use the menu as a guideline. If I really want something that’s a little higher, I’ll order it. But there are always some surprises hidden in the menu that I appreciate knowing about so I can steer clear.

Unhealthy: McDonald’s Living Social Deal

I love discount sites like LivingSocial and usually find great deals for some really fun activities. But I was horrified when I saw the recent deal for McDonalds– for only $13, you could buy 5 Big Macs and 5 Large Fries. In a nation that is already fighting an obesity epidemic, Living Social is suggesting that $13 buys 5,200 calories. Here’s the truth and the sad part- nutritious, healthy food does cost more money, but it’s a choice that’s well worth it when we consider the costs of taking care of the one body we are given.

Healthy: Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Program

In an age where physical education has been cut from almost every school, kids today just aren’t getting enough (if any!) exercise. But First Lady, Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative is dedicated to solving childhood obesity within a generation! The program gives parents helpful information and fosters environments that support healthy choices as well as providing healthier foods and schools, ensuring that every family has access to healthy, affordable food and upping children’s activity level. These are the kind of positive changes that we can be proud of!
