The Power of Snacking Event

Hi lovelies! I hope that your week is going great and you are as excited as I am that we are one day away from the weekend! Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Luna Bar and IFTF Study event at the W Hotel! At the event, I got the chance to meet the lovely Kristine in person! Her blog is one of my favorites and I can attest that she is just as funny and sweet in real life!

After arriving at the event, chatting with Kristine and sampling a few delicious appetizers, it was time for the panel to commence. Sponsored by Luna, the Institute for the Future conducted a study about the future of women’s snacking, in hopes to “identify, analyze and forecast significant trends and forces shaping the way women snack.” One thing that came from this was the idea that snacking will be accepted and become mainstream in the next 10 years.

With this, they found that six key behaviors emerged:

  1. Adopting more lifestyle-appropriate eating patterns
  2. Eating with deeper enjoyment
  3. Finding ways to sort through the deluge of information about food health
  4. Designing customized feedback loops for information and cues
  5. Preparing snacks more creatively
  6. Understanding bodies at a finer level of granularity

The panel discussion (made of up of a nutritionist, blogger, researcher and professor) had a lot to say on all of these behaviors but a few stood out to me. I really appreciated that women’s attitudes toward snacking tend to change as women juggle more and more these days. As a young professional, snacking is essential in my life and eating 2 breakfasts, lunch, snack and dinner works for me, given that my days start at 6:30 and end around 12:30 am. Keeping my blood sugar stable throughout the day and my many often changing, unpredictable activities means that I feel good and healthy. I asked the panel about this and whether they noticed a generational shift when it came to snacking, i.e. do younger generations embrace it due to their often hectic schedules more than older generations? Miriam Lueck Avery, the Research Manager from IFTF informed me that the difference comes not from age but life events. For example, the correlation between snacking attitudes was high between young professionals and baby boomers whose children are out of the house. I found this interesting and made the connection that people who most embrace snacking tend to have more unpredictable schedules.

Another change I found interesting was the shift towards eating with a deeper enjoyment. The panel discussed how in the past ten years, everything has been fat-free, sugar-free, carb-free or as they said “taste-free”. These mechanically engineered foods were as far from clean eating as you can get and I used to live on them! But it was a time when these were considered “health foods” which seemed synonymous with being healthy. Now women are starting to pay more attention to what’s in the foods that they put in their bodies and they want it to wholesome and nutritious. That’s where Luna comes in- they wanted to make something that would give meaningful nutrition to your body and mind while still tasting indulgent.

As you can see, I found this study fascinating and could probably write you an essay on it. But since this is a blog, I’m going to leave it at that. Based on the study’s predictions, I think we can be really excited in the direction things are heading and feel proud in our changing attitude towards food. (i.e. Let’s get rid of the guilt!)

On the way out of the event I picked up the generous Luna goodby bag and am so excited to try their new Peanut Honey Pretzel flavor. I’m saving it for a snack tomorrow afternoon, which in my opinion is true will power. (However, a mini Luna White Chocolate Macademia Nut was consumed immediately!)   1. Had SO much fun meeting you (Finally!) and chatting! Such a great event too. I just ate my Peanut Honey Pretzel bar and ohhhh my goodness it’s just as good as I remember!!

  2. This event sounds so awesome! Glad you shared some of it with us! I can’t wait for snacking to become more mainstream because I feel so awkward at work when I snack twice a day between meals. I do it, because it’s good for me, but still, I wish it could go unnoticed sometimes!

    I love snacking on bars or yogurt topped with bars! haha … that Peanut Honey Pretzel one looks amazing!!
