What to Wear Wednesday: ’80s Style

Hi lovelies! Thanks for your kind words about how I’ve been feeling. I am definitely on the mend and despite dealing with some pain, and am happily feeling stronger each and every day. I’m so lucky that through all of this, I have such an amazing support team. I have been blessed with an incredible family and it is through their help and prayers, that I credit my improvement with!

But before all of this happened, I went out for a fun night celebrating my friend Virginia’s birthday. She decided to do it ’80s style and we went to see the band Tainted Love. For those who haven’t heard of them, they are an ’80s cover band that is actually incredibly good. They play a lot in San Francisco (I actually saw them on NYE) but they also travel around as well. As an 1980s kid (ok, so I was born in ’87 so was technically an ’80s baby) so I’m a huge fan of ’80s music. I first discovered it in college actually when I became obsessed with Journey. I credit this to Fraternity exchanges when the DJs would always play “Don’t Stop Believing”, or other non-Journey classics like “Jesse’s Girl” and “Living on a Prayer.” And of course Madonna. Obviously. I always found myself singing these songs with my friends at the top of my lungs and they are some of my best memories from the dances. In my post-college years, when an ’80s song comes on and people are surprised that I know every word, I explain that they are my “end of the night songs.” So a whole night singing those songs with a live band with all my friends AND the opportunity to get dressed up? DONE.

I’ve always gotten really into dressing up for theme parties. Being in a sorority in college I had a LOT of opportunities to do so and get this- I used to sketch my potential costumes during class. (When I was little I wanted to be a fashion designer, so I guess a little part of that still remains.) Though I didn’t sketch this outfit, I did my research. I knew for my ’80s look I wanted to channel Madonna. And this is what I came up with…

When it comes to shopping for costumes, Forever 21 is the best. Everything is cheap and they often have so many ridiculous items that are completely theme-party appropriate. All of the above (with the exception of my Nine West shoes) is from Forever 21! It took a little time to shop the store (and I felt about 10 years older than everyone there) and with the addition of cutting my t-shirt thanks to a Youtube video, the outfit came together pretty easily.

And of course, I have to show you some pictures of my gorgeous friends, rocking their neon looks:

Katie had amazing fishnet gloves and Biz was rocking the cutest legwarmers.

Questions:

-Do you like theme parties? What’s your favorite theme? (I’m always looking for new ideas!)

-Have you ever seen an ’80s cover band?

Bottom of the Barrel

Hi lovelies! Happy Tuesday! The rain has finally left San Francisco and the sun is back out. (And yes, I’m such a baby because it rained for less than a week and I still couldn’t deal!) But now that the temps are scheduled to be back in the 60s I can set aside my puffy coat for a while… though let’s be serious, puffy coats really do feel like wearable sleeping bags and there is nothing bad about that!

Did any of you watch the Bachelor last night?? As you know, I’m a little addicted and this week’s episode in Park City was a good one! In my Bachelor bracket I have Lindzi winning it all, but after this week I’m starting to think that Kacie B and Jennifer are my true frontrunners. The dates this week were pretty great and I would have loved to go horseback riding or to the Clay Walker concert with Jennifer. I actually love Clay Walker’s song “Fall” and for those of you who haven’t heard it…

Unfortunately, I’m a little nervous that Courtney is going to pull a Vienna and completely dupe Ben. I cannot stand girls that are mean like that to others and I spent plenty of time last night asking how she could be so mean! Unfortunately, it looks like next week is going to be even worse when she decides to take Ben skinny dipping… Oh dear.

Now onto other things! As you know, I love to eat. I’m pretty sure that’s one of the things that comes through most over here at GGG. In fact, one of my favorite things to do is go grocery shopping and wander up and down the aisles looking for new products. But January has been so busy so far that I haven’t had time to do a real grocery shopping trip. Which consequently means that all of those items pushed to the back of the pantry and the freezer are finally getting used up.

In theory that’s a good thing but in reality, there is a reason that stuff never gets eaten. I have had more random stuff from the freezer than I care to admit and I have been subsiding on boxed soup for lunch… and not even the good flavors (aka no butternut squash which I could happily subside on!) I’ve tried to be a little creative but so far the most creative I got was making a faux-Chipotle bowl by combining brown rice, black beans, chicken and salsa. I think my Fauxpotle was even better than the real thing but now I’m out of 2/4 ingredients!

I am finally planning a grocery trip for Thursday but until then, I’m going to be trying to wrestle up something from what I’ve got. (Or in tonight’s ‘home from work late’ case, get Greek takeout.)

Questions:

-Did you watch the Bachelor this week? Thoughts?

-What are your favorite ‘nothing in the pantry’ meals?? (Please, I need ideas!)

Fave 5 Friday

Hi lovelies! Happy, happy Friday! This has been a really busy week work wise so I’m definitely ready for a restful, fun weekend! I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend and take some time to relax and enjoy the company of your friends and family! And now it’s time for 5 things I’m loving this week!

1. Summer in San Francisco!

Even an iphone was able to capture this beauty!

The well known quote by Marc Twain goes, “the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” Well, it’s true. San Francisco summers are notoriously cold which was a bit of a shock for me coming from LA and Sacramento. I used to walk around sans jacket in the city over the summer and soon realized that a light jacket is essential for San Francisco living. But now our time has finally come and we are experiencing some beautiful weather here! So while everyone in the blog world is talking about Pumpkin Spice Lattes, I’m finally ready for some iced coffee!

2. New Lady Antebellum cd!

I’ve mentioned before, my tendency to listen to the same music over and over again, which has happened to me again recently. But when I scrolled through iTunes, I found that Lady Antebellum had come out with a new cd! I love the sound of Lady A, but do not love the song that they are most known for- Need You Now, after it got way, way overplayed. Their new cd on the other hand is great and I’m excited to have some new music!

3. Fall TV is Back!

This year, I did get sucked into the Bachelor Pad, but let’s face it, usually summer shows are just not that good. But I love fall tv premier season when all my favorite shows come back! I’ll admit that I’m really excited about the return of Glee, Modern Family, The Good Wife and my CW guilty pleasures, Gossip Girl and 90210. I may also have gotten hooked on Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family. Don’t judge me, it’s addicting.

4. Stacked Heel Boots!

Though I’m loving summer, I can’t help but be excited about fall fashion! One of my fall must haves is a perfect pair of boots. While I can usually be found in a 5 inch stilleto, I am finding myself very attracted to thicker, stacked heels! I think if I can find the right pair, they will be perfect with pants, skirts and sweater dresses! I’m officially on the hunt now so when Piperlime sent out this email today, it was kismet!

5. Mother’s Frosted Circus Animal Cookies!

These were always my mom’s favorite cookies growing up and since they were appropriately girly, they quickly became mine. Last weekend they were brought back into my life when my Grandma put out a whole spread of these cookies and my favorite candy (peanut m&ms) for something to ‘munch’ on when I visited her house! Needless to say, she sent them home with me and I have been enjoying my favorite little cookies and feel like a kid again!

Questions:

-What Fall tv show are you glad is back? Or is there a new one you are excited about?

-What’s on your Fall shopping list?

-What was your favorite cookie or candy growing up/now?

Blissful Blogger

Hi lovelies! I hope that you had a wonderful 3-day weekend! I had a half-day on Friday so this weekend has felt especially long and lovely. I’ve been rather mia from the blog world all weekend long so I’m excited to get caught up today!

In the spirit of getting caught up, it’s time for me to finally write my blissful blogger post! I’m so lucky to have been tagged in this by some wonderful bloggers (Beautiful Disasters, Simple Eats, Flopoodle, Squirrel Snackin’) so it’s time to tell you some random facts. I always love these posts because I love to hear more details about other bloggers so hopefully you’ll enjoy it too!

So without further ado, here are 7 things you don’t know about me!

1. I love Shakespeare!

At Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London!

I’ve always loved reading and seeing plays, but I have a special soft spot for Shakespeare. My love of Shakespeare was born in the 7th grade when my class went to the Oregon Shakespeare festival. I sat there amazed and in awe, watching these plays and horrified that my classmates were talking or sleeping during such incredible performances! Since then, my love of Shakespeare has only grown and I was lucky enough to see the Merry Wives of Windsor at Shakespeare’s Globe Theater. My love of Shakespeare also grew in school though my Political Science senior seminar- Shakespeare and Politics!

2. My hair is naturally curly

Freshman year of college at a Grecian themed party

It took me a very long time to find photographic evidence of my curly hair. As you can tell by most of the pictures I post, I never wear my hair curly. The funny thing is that as a kid, I was in so many plays and dance recitals so my mom used to have to curl my hair every night. I hated sleeping in those foam rollers (anyone else remember those?) and would wish every time that I had naturally curly hair. Well when I hit puberty, my wish came true, only I didn’t want curly hair anymore! I got my first straightener in 8th grade and have blowing my hair out and straightening it ever since!

3. I am afraid of ants

The idea of putting up a picture of real ants grossed me out too much, so this is a picture from the movie!

I don’t know when it started, but somewhere along the way I became terrified of ants. Everyone always makes fun of me because they are so small and (basically) harmless but they freak me out! I feel like where there is one ant, there will inevitably be more and groups of ants scare me.

4. I used to want to be a fashion designer

Sophomore year- If it Isn't Neon, it shouldn't be on exchange and the only dress I have ever sewn by hand!

Somewhere in our boxes of photos, there is a picture of me in fourth grade, dressed in a periwinkle suit with a measuring tape around my neck. It was Halloween and I was dressed up as what I wanted to be someday… a fashion designer! Forget the fact that I couldn’t (and still can’t) sew- I used to sketch all the time and loved fashion. In fact, as a kid I used to go into stores with my mom and re-accessorize their mannequins. I’ve come a long way since then, but when I was in college I used to sketch in class to brainstorm outfits for dates and costumes for exchanges.

5. I have a group of friends called the Core4

The first Core4 Bride 2 years ago!

I’m blessed to have lots of wonderful friends but one particular group of my friends call ourselves the Core 4. We met my sophomore year of high school in French class and immediately bonded over cooking projects, videos and scrapbooks (yes, my teacher was awesome) and started hanging out outside of class. We’ve remained close friends over the years and although we don’t see each other as often as we’d like, we’ve been able to maintain our friendship through lots of long facebook messages!

6. I’m a DG!

My first picture as a DG on bid night!

I’m not sure if I’ve ever expressly mentioned this on the blog, but my freshman year of college I joined the sorority, Delta Gamma. It made my college experience so much fun and I met some of my best friends through my sorority. I’m now active in the alumni chapter in SF and getting to know some amazing women here too! (Plus, I have all the anchor/nautical gear you could ever want so I’m always set for those themes!)

7. I love country music!

I’m mostly a top-40 kind of girl and I’m not ashamed to admit it, but the only true music genre that I love is country music. Some of my favorite artists are Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, etc. I feel like country music is the type that can totally express how you are feeling so I love putting it on and belting it out when I drive or listening to it on repeat on my iphone.

So that’s it! Hope you learned some random things about me! Since I’m not the best at keeping track of who’s done this, apologies if you’ve already filled this out/been tagged!
